Look at the outcome
When we say we must change, have we already decided what change should look like?
We may want to become calmer, more disciplined, free from an urge, or no longer behave in a particular way. What we want to become is often the opposite of what troubles us now.
If we are restless, we seek calm. If we feel controlled by an urge, we seek discipline. But is this image born from understanding what is happening, or from wanting to escape it?
We follow that image because we believe reaching it will end our conflict. But if the image is a reaction to the conflict, can pursuing it end the conflict, or does the struggle toward it become another part of the same conflict?
Does modifying ourselves in this way end suffering?
If it does not, how does change happen? What actually ends suffering?
Can we find out what change actually is without deciding beforehand what it should look like?
